As the largest professionally led nonprofit network of cancer support worldwide, the Cancer Support Community is dedicated to ensuring that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.
CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY HISTORY
In 1982, Dr. Harold and Harriet Benjamin transformed the way our culture faces cancer when they founded The Wellness Community, the predecessor of Cancer Support Community, to provide emotional and social support to individuals – as well as their families, friends and caregivers – throughout their cancer journey and to ensure that no one would ever face cancer alone.
In 2009, The Wellness Community and Gilda’s Club Worldwide merged to become Cancer Support Community. In 2018, MyLifeLine, a digital community with more than 30,000 patients, caregivers, and supporters, joined Cancer Support Community, providing additional digital services in an innovative, groundbreaking way. The organization also administers a toll-free helpline and produces award-winning educational resources that reach more than one million people each year.

Cancer Support Community is the world’s largest provider of cancer support services and the nation’s largest employer of psychosocial oncology mental health professionals. It now consists of a global network of 175 locations, delivering more than $50 million in free support services to more than one million patients and families worldwide.
Cancer Support Community has become one of the leading organizations in cancer support and has remained dedicated to its mission of providing emotional support and care for individuals impacted by cancer, including their families and friends.
Through its Research and Training Institute, Cancer Support Community conducts cutting-edge research on the emotional, psychological, and financial journey of cancer patients. The organization’s Cancer Policy Institute advocates at all levels of government for policies to help individuals whose lives have been disrupted by cancer. Through all these developments, Cancer Support Community has worked to further expand its services so that “no one faces cancer alone”.
CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY SERVICES
Cancer Support Community Central Ohio is here to provide support throughout the cancer journey, by providing support to survivors, family members, caregivers, children and friends, who are living with, through and beyond cancer.
A comprehensive menu of evidence-based programming is offered for individuals, families, children, young adults, and caregivers, including: 1) Support and Counseling (support groups, customized care plans, short-term individual and family counseling, art therapy) 2) Education (lunch and learn presentations, educational workshops, a library of free cancer-specific publications) 3) Healthy Lifestyle Programs (stress management sessions, hands-on cooking and nutrition classes, exercise and movement programs), 4) Social Gatherings (family potlucks, community events, book clubs), and 5) Referrals to other community resources.
All programs and services are led by licensed health professionals and credentialed facilitators and are open to anyone with any type or stage of cancer – and their loved ones and caregivers – at no cost.
Research shows that the best cancer care includes emotional support. Cancer Support Community provides people with the skills and resources they need to play an active role in their cancer care and to optimize the quality of their lives. The organization’s focus is to assure that each person’s needs are addressed so that no one faces cancer alone.
